1. There are two main considerations when buying a computer.
• What do you what to do with computer? What software do you anticipate using.
• Desktop or laptop.
• Price range.
• Decide on a price range for new computer and a total cost for computer, peripherals (such as printer) and software.
2. Computer components to consider.
• Processor (Brain of computer)
• Size of hard drive (Storage)
• Size of monitor/screen
• Ram (random access memory)
• Keyboard
• Sound
• Modem (for connecting to phone line for faxing and internet connection)
• Number of ways to connect peripherals to computer, USB and parallel ports.
• CD rom drive (Most new software comes on CD's)
• Disc drive (used less and less)
3. Software (Programs) – Get as much software included with purchase of computer as you can.
• Windows
• Virus protection – Norton
• Norton utilities – to keep computer in shape
• Windows office – for word processing, spread sheet, and databases.
4. Peripherals – Additional components that connect to computer.
• Printer – inkjet (recommended)
• Color – You will want color
• Approximately $100 - $200. The true costs are the ink cartridges.
